Gracie, Sam, and I went our separate ways to change into warm, dark blue or black, clothing so we wouldnât be as easily seen at night.
At home, dressed and ready to go, I put Ariel into a heavy sweater so sheâd stay warm, too. I drove to Samâs to wait for Saraâs call, to tell us when all the officers left the stable.
Gracie hurried in a little before noon, just as Sara called me. âOkay, the last one just left. Come to the house and Iâll tell you what I know. We really need to help Mike.â
âI know. Weâre on our way. Thanks, Sara.â
âThank you, Kallie.â
We gathered in Saraâs kitchen, sipping hot coffee and enjoying the chocolate chip cookies Abby offered, the pre-made kind you just break apart and bake. Ariel sat by the sliding glass window behind me, watching birds at the feeders in the back yard.
Leaning forward, Sara said, âThe sheriff deputies showed up around seven-thirty, warrant in hand, and started searching. They didnât spend long on my place or the stable. Almost as if they knew what they were looking for⦠and where. Like someone told them to search Mikeâs house for a gun.â Hand gripping her mug, she shook her head. âAnd they really focused the search until they found what they were looking for.â
âSomebody told the police theyâd find a gun in Mikeâs house. Who do you think would do that? What have they got against Mike?â Gracie propped her chin on her fist.
Chewing on a cookie, Abby said, âI bet the murderer planted the gun in Mikeâs house. Because youâre getting too much information from the horses and the heâs scared youâre going to learn who he is. If he can convince everyone Mike is the killer, even for a little while, itâll give him more time to cover his tracks, and he might get away with murder.â
âThatâs impressive,â Gracie said to Abby. âHow old did you say you are? Thirty?â
Abby blushed and grinned.
Sara put her arm around her daughter. âSheâs read all the Nancy Drew books and every author writing mysteries for preteens she can.â She kissed Abbyâs cheek. âPlus, sheâs brilliant.â
âAwww, Mom.â
âThen between the five of us, weâre smarter than any murderer. Weâre not going to stop digging,â I said. âWe will find out who killed Jack and where Sue is.â
âHow?â Sam asked, not challenging me, but encouraging me to think this through.
âWe go back to the beginning. It all started with Sueâs disappearance.â I stared outside for a moment, dredging up every detail of what Ravi showed me that first day. The woman running through the alley who turned out to be Sara, not Sue. Had Ravi ever given me an image of anything with Sue? No. I shifted in my seat to look at Sara. They were similar, age and hair color, but the woman Ravi showed me was Sara. âEvery time Iâve communicated with Ravi, sheâs never shown me Sue.â Biting my lip, I asked, âWhy do you think that is?â Tension tipped my pulse into a quicker tempo.
