Gracie, Sam, and I went our separate ways to change into warm, dark blue or black, clothing so we wouldn’t be as easily seen at night.

At home, dressed and ready to go, I put Ariel into a heavy sweater so she’d stay warm, too. I drove to Sam’s to wait for Sara’s call, to tell us when all the officers left the stable.

Gracie hurried in a little before noon, just as Sara called me. “Okay, the last one just left. Come to the house and I’ll tell you what I know. We really need to help Mike.”

“I know. We’re on our way. Thanks, Sara.”

“Thank you, Kallie.”

We gathered in Sara’s kitchen, sipping hot coffee and enjoying the chocolate chip cookies Abby offered, the pre-made kind you just break apart and bake. Ariel sat by the sliding glass window behind me, watching birds at the feeders in the back yard.

Leaning forward, Sara said, “The sheriff deputies showed up around seven-thirty, warrant in hand, and started searching. They didn’t spend long on my place or the stable. Almost as if they knew what they were looking for… and where. Like someone told them to search Mike’s house for a gun.” Hand gripping her mug, she shook her head. “And they really focused the search until they found what they were looking for.”

“Somebody told the police they’d find a gun in Mike’s house. Who do you think would do that? What have they got against Mike?” Gracie propped her chin on her fist.

Chewing on a cookie, Abby said, “I bet the murderer planted the gun in Mike’s house. Because you’re getting too much information from the horses and the he’s scared you’re going to learn who he is. If he can convince everyone Mike is the killer, even for a little while, it’ll give him more time to cover his tracks, and he might get away with murder.”

“That’s impressive,” Gracie said to Abby. “How old did you say you are? Thirty?”

Abby blushed and grinned.

Sara put her arm around her daughter. “She’s read all the Nancy Drew books and every author writing mysteries for preteens she can.” She kissed Abby’s cheek. “Plus, she’s brilliant.”

“Awww, Mom.”

“Then between the five of us, we’re smarter than any murderer. We’re not going to stop digging,” I said. “We will find out who killed Jack and where Sue is.”

“How?” Sam asked, not challenging me, but encouraging me to think this through.

“We go back to the beginning. It all started with Sue’s disappearance.” I stared outside for a moment, dredging up every detail of what Ravi showed me that first day. The woman running through the alley who turned out to be Sara, not Sue. Had Ravi ever given me an image of anything with Sue? No. I shifted in my seat to look at Sara. They were similar, age and hair color, but the woman Ravi showed me was Sara. “Every time I’ve communicated with Ravi, she’s never shown me Sue.” Biting my lip, I asked, “Why do you think that is?” Tension tipped my pulse into a quicker tempo.
